March Book: Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and Language of Human Experience

Book Summary  

If we want to find the way back to ourselves and one another, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. In Atlas of the Heart, we explore eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human and walk through a new framework for cultivating meaningful connection. This is for the mapmakers and travelers in all of us. 
 

Brene Brown  

Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston, where she holds the Huffington Foundation Endowed Chair at the Graduate College of Social Work. Brené is also a visiting professor in management at the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business. 

She has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. She is the author of six #1 New York Times best sellers and is the host of two award-winning Spotify podcasts, Unlocking Us and Dare to Lead. 

Brené’s books have been translated into more than 30 languages, and her titles include Atlas of the HeartDare to Lead, Braving the Wilderness, Rising Strong, Daring Greatly, and The Gifts of Imperfection. With Tarana Burke, she co-edited the best-selling anthology You Are Your Best Thing: Vulnerability, Shame Resilience, and the Black Experience. 

Her TED talk on the Power of Vulnerability is one of the top five most-viewed TED talks in the world, with over 50 million views. She is also the first researcher to have a filmed lecture on Netflix, and in March 2022, she launched a new show on HBO Max that focuses on her latest book, Atlas of the Heart. 

Brené lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband, Steve. They have two children, Ellen and Charlie.

About Your Book Study Hostesses 

Erin Curtis is a school counselor at Powell High School and the Shoshone Learning Center in Powell, Wyoming. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Science at the University of Wyoming and a Masters of Education in School Counseling from Liberty University.  She currently serves as the Conference Chairwoman for the Wyoming School Counseling Association.  


Kayla Wilkinson is a Licensed Professional Counselor and school counselor at Natrona County High School in Casper, WY. She currently provides IEP counseling to students with special needs and is the President of the Wyoming School Counseling Association. She graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2019 with a Master’s in School Counseling and has presented on various topics around the state concerning counseling students with disabilities, using expressive techniques, and how to collaborate with school counselors. 
 

Intended Outcomes/Objectives 

  1. Participants will be able to identify 87 emotions and experiences and how they relate to human connection and communication.  
  2. Participants will be able to identify ways to use feeling language to help students understand themselves and express their thoughts.  
  3. Participates will be able to formulate and develop resources to enhance the services they provide to their population of students/coworkers.

    1 page per chapter minimum  (single spaced)

    (4) how you might apply this in your role at school?
